YouthDOCs – Intellectual Outputs (IO)

Three types of Intellectual Outputs (IO) are delivered through the YouthDOCs Project 2014-2016

 IO1: YouthDOCs
a Teachers’Guide
IO2: The “YouthDOCS …in our own view”
-an interactive Platform & a virtual festival
 IO3: YouthDOCs-
tutorials

IO1: YouthDOCS – a Teachers Guide
Short description: A written manual of approx. 150pages with texts on educational methodology, audiovisual education, media literacy, drama in education for teachers who require more theoretical acquaintance with these issues. Moreover, this manual will mainly serve as a practical Teachers’ Guide, providing analytic step by step suggestions for the management and creative facilitation of student groups and offering alternative examples. Such alternatives and examples, after the completion of the project, will allow new teachers to develop similar projects and modify similar activities.
Therefore, the Guide will include
a) selected articles on the educational methodology commonly agreed and implemented in the project,
b) selected articles on the film documentaries and documentary theatre,
c) detailed guide in the form of a curriculum for primary and secondary education schools with aims/objectives/ and proposed specific activities for each age,
d) concrete film and drama exercises, techniques, e) web/bibliography

IO2: The “YouthDOCS …in our own view” -an interactive Platform & a virtual festival
Short description: A digital communication platform which will allow any group of young students a) to upload its own YouthDOC b) to comment and exchange views via specially designed forms on other groups videos. Also, future collaborating teachers form a network of virtual festivals among their schools. Collaborating teachers will agree on a commonly shared list of short student productions. In a public show among each school’s students, screen projection of the productions will be presented while groups of students will vote and decide on virtual awards. Each school’s awards will be loaded on the platform thus allowing between schools comparisons and public criticism be developed. Since all groups of students will view the same videos, the platform may invite small written texts and generate critical discourse regarding the differing -or common- opinions triggered by these commonly shared videos. The platform will serve project purposes like the activity “in our own view…” (described in methodology and process) but also, after the completion of the project, will be an available tool for groups of teachers who may want to run informal, virtual festivals among their schools and students.
The platform will be linked with any other webpage or portals as the Ministry of Education/Media &TV Education (in Greece) etc.

IO3: YouthDOCs-Video tutorials
Short description: Eight specifically targeted tutorial videos will be created/edited addressing students and teachers.
In particular:
A) Four short video-tutorials (6-8 minutes each), addressing students, using narration, animation, moving images, sounds, actors etc,
More specifically:
a1) The “Whats & Whys for students”: Two videos (5min each) will provide information for students on what a YouthDOC is (concept, description and examples) and
a2) The “How to do it for students”: Two videos will provide basic DOs and DON’Ts for students of documentary planning and shooting sound recording, editing and post production.
After the completion of the project, the videos will be available for guiding future groups of students in similar projects. These video tutorials allow the understanding of the concept and demonstrate the dynamic character of the audiovisual tools such as camera movement and editing, because it can show a filming crew in action but also the end result as will appear on the screen.
B) Four videos tutorials addressing teachers who would like to facilitate and guide groups of students producing a short documentary based on the project’s concept.
More specifically:
b1) The “Whats & Whys for teachers”: Two videos (8min each) will provide information for teachers on what a YouthDOC is (concept, description and examples) and how & why teachers can make use of this project in their everyday teaching practice to improve learning quality.
b2) The “How to do it for teachers”:Two videos (30min each) in the form of training sessions for teachers, which will reproduce the context of a training seminar, with a number of successive speakers/trainers using stimulating slides and answering hypothetical questions. These videos will also include very short examples of managing small groups of students in similar tasks. The pedagogical-methodological content of these two sessions will include: acquaintance between the group members, using simple audiovisual activities which -at the same time- induce awareness of the audiovisual equipment as well as development of criteria for evaluation and discussion of audiovisual texts (use of digital media, tablets, mobiles), elicitation -among the students- of themes suitable for a youth documentary, carrying an opinion research among the school population, leading to the documentary’s final theme, coordinating student research regarding the theme chosen, the teacher-animator role in coordinating the creative process in a group of students, encouraging students to use popular media (tablets, mobiles etc) in researching, shooting as well as recording the project’s procedures (making of), preview presentation of the final video, public presentation of the final video, theatrical activities inspired by the documentary
After the completion of the project, the videos will be available for guiding future teacher-facilitators in similar projects.
